Rehabilitation medicine emerged after World War II to treat patients with injuries and disabilities. Although its history is relatively short compared to other medical fields, it has become one of the three main pillars of modern healthcare alongside preventive medicine and therapeutic medicine due to its focus on improving quality of life. With advancements in medical science, many conditions that were once untreatable are now manageable, leading to an increased need for rehabilitation to address related complications. Additionally, as life expectancy rises and the elderly population grows, age-related physical decline and chronic illnesses have further highlighted the importance of rehabilitation medicine. Rehabilitation is defined as “the process of restoring and maintaining the highest possible level of physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological, and social functioning.” It aims to help patients with pain, paralysis, or other impairments regain their remaining physical and mental abilities to the fullest extent, enabling them to live as independently as possible in their daily lives.
